About Ngāti Paoa

An independent New Zealand guide to online pokies, sports betting and crypto casinos. We exist to help adult Kiwis make informed, safer choices about gambling — with honest reviews, plain-English regulatory explainers, and clear responsible-gambling pathways.

Who we are

Ngāti Paoa is an independent affiliate publisher operating in New Zealand. Our editorial team writes, reviews and updates this site; our commercial team disclosed in this section funds the operation through casino and sportsbook affiliate commissions. We are not owned by, sponsored by, or operated on behalf of the Ngāti Paoa iwi or the Ngāti Paoa Iwi Trust. The site name reflects the domain we publish under and is not a claim of iwi affiliation.

What we do

We test, review and rank online gambling operators accessible to New Zealand players, and we publish plain-English explainers of NZ gambling law, payments, tax treatment and responsible-gambling tools. Every operator we list is reviewed against our 12-point methodology before it gets a placement. Reviews are refreshed every 90 days, or sooner when a regulator, operator licence status or banking rail materially changes.

Our 12-point review methodology

Every casino and sportsbook on this site is scored across twelve criteria. A failure on any single critical criterion — unverified licence, refusal to pay legitimate winnings, hidden bonus terms, no self-exclusion option — disqualifies an operator regardless of affiliate value.

Editorial independence & commercial disclosure

We earn affiliate commissions when readers sign up for casinos and sportsbooks we list. This is the only revenue source for the site. Three rules govern how we handle that:

  1. Rankings are not for sale. Operators cannot pay to appear higher in our tables. Order is determined by our methodology score.
  2. Reviews are not bundled with placement. An operator we don't currently link to affiliate can still appear in our editorial coverage (and vice versa).
  3. Responsible-gambling content is sacrosanct. No commercial relationship influences how we cover responsible-gambling resources, self-exclusion, or harm-minimisation.

If any of those principles ever appear to be in conflict on a page, please tell us. We treat editorial complaints with the same seriousness as a safer-gambling concern.

Our position on the 2026 NZ regulatory reform

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 commenced on 1 May 2026 and a licensed NZ online casino market is expected to begin operating from late 2026 with up to 15 operators awarded licences in the September 2026 auction. We support the introduction of the licensed regime and the harm-minimisation requirements that come with it. Where a licensed NZ option exists for the kind of play a reader is researching, we'll recommend it. Until those licences are issued, we transparently disclose the offshore status of operators we list and explain the consumer-protection implications.

Our position on the Racing Industry Act 2020

The Racing Industry Act 2020 amendments effective 28 June 2025 make sports and racing betting from a New Zealand location lawful only via TAB NZ or Betcha. We comply with that — our online betting coverage leads with TAB NZ / Betcha as the legal NZ options and clearly flags any offshore operator references as informational for readers outside New Zealand.
