Brand status flags — verified 15 June 2026

  • Gambiva holds an Anjouan (Comoros) licence rather than Curaçao — a newer, weaker-reputation jurisdiction. Bonus structure varies across sources; NZ acceptance was not confirmed.
  • 22bet and BetLabel are sister brands under TechSolutions N.V. — same trading book, near-identical bonus terms.
  • Rabona and Librabet share parent Araxio Development N.V.; Casinia and Spinanga share parent Rabidi N.V.
  • Zotabet's sport welcome is structurally unusual — a points-based "Hunting Bonus" drip-feeds free bets rather than a single deposit match, and free-bet stakes are not returned with winnings.
  • Many of these brands lead with their casino welcome rather than a dedicated sport bonus. Where the welcome shown at signup differs from what's listed here, defer to the operator's signup page.

Important — Racing Industry Act 2020

Since 28 June 2025, it is unlawful in New Zealand to take or place sports and racing bets with any operator other than TAB NZ or Betcha. The Department of Internal Affairs and the Racing Integrity Board enforce this. Offshore sportsbook brands shown later on this page are included for informational comparison and are intended for readers outside New Zealand. If you are located in NZ, bet only with TAB NZ or Betcha.

For decades, sports and racing betting in New Zealand was a TAB monopoly. That position was reinforced by the Racing Industry Act 2020, and then locked in by amendments that took effect on 28 June 2025.

The amendments did two things. They made it explicitly unlawful for any operator other than TAB NZ to accept sports or racing bets from people located in New Zealand, and they made it unlawful for NZ-located residents to place such bets with offshore operators. Both sides of the transaction are now within the Act's reach.

The DIA and the Racing Integrity Board enforce the Act. Practical enforcement has focused on advertising — agencies, affiliates and media outlets that promote offshore sportsbooks to NZ audiences. Pursuing individual recreational punters is not the regulator's priority, but the legal exposure exists, and offshore operator KYC at withdrawal will catch any NZ-located player attempting to cash out.

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 — which we cover in detail on the online pokies homepage — applies to casino games and does not alter sports betting. The two regimes are separate.

TAB NZ vs Betcha — the only comparison that matters for Kiwi punters

Most "best sportsbooks NZ" listicles online are out of date, internationally focused, or pushing offshore brands that NZ residents cannot legally use. The honest comparison for an NZ punter today is between the two TAB NZ-operated products: TAB NZ (the legacy retail and online brand) and Betcha (the mobile-first product launched in partnership with Entain in late 2024).

Pricing is the same — UX is the differentiator

The single most important thing to understand: TAB NZ and Betcha do not compete on odds. They share a trading book. A Warriors moneyline that pays NZ$1.85 on TAB will pay NZ$1.85 on Betcha. The choice between them is about product experience, market breadth, and where you place your bets — not better lines.

If you bet primarily on rugby league, AFL or NRL with builder-style multi-bets and want the cleanest mobile experience, Betcha is the better fit. If you bet on a broad mix that includes harness and greyhound racing, or if you ever want to take a bet at a retail outlet or on-course, TAB NZ is the right account.

Plenty of punters keep both. That is perfectly normal under the Racing Industry Act 2020 — both are licensed NZ operators under the same parent.

Major sports covered & the markets New Zealanders bet

Rugby Union

The deepest market on the NZ books. All Blacks, Super Rugby Pacific, Mitre 10/Bunnings NPC, Northern Hemisphere internationals, the Rugby Championship and Rugby World Cup. Markets go well beyond head-to-head: handicap, first try-scorer, anytime try-scorer, total team tries, half-time / full-time, margin bands, individual player performance props. Live in-play is well-supported.

Rugby League

NRL is the year-round headline. Warriors, Storm, Panthers, Broncos all draw heavy NZ volume. Markets include line, total points, first try-scorer, anytime try-scorer, total team try-scorers, first scoring play type and end-of-season specials (premiership, wooden spoon, top try-scorer, Dally M). State of Origin and the international windows extend the calendar.

Cricket

Black Caps internationals (Test, ODI, T20I), domestic Super Smash, IPL and BBL. Limited-overs markets are deep — first-innings score bands, top batter, top bowler, method-of-dismissal, fall-of-first-wicket. Test cricket markets are thinner but include draw-no-bet, session totals and player runs.

Football (Soccer)

A-League, English Premier League, UEFA competitions, FIFA World Cup (see our FIFA World Cup 2026 hub), All Whites, Football Ferns. Markets include 1X2, both teams to score, over/under goals, correct score, first/last goal-scorer, half-time / full-time, Asian handicap.

Horse Racing & Harness

NZ thoroughbred, Australian thoroughbred, Hong Kong, harness, greyhound. TAB NZ's deepest historic strength. Markets: win, place, each-way, exotic (quinella, trifecta, first 4, all-up). Tote pools are integrated with Australian tote partners on major race days.

Other sports with strong NZ markets

  • NBA, NFL, MLB (US sports — late-night NZ time)
  • UFC and boxing
  • Tennis (Grand Slams, ATP/WTA tour)
  • Golf (majors, NZ Open)
  • NBL Australia and basketball NZL
  • Esports (CS, Dota, League of Legends)

Betting markets explained

Moneyline / Head-to-head

The simplest bet: pick the team or player to win. Draws on three-way markets are priced separately. For sports without a draw outcome (most US sports, tennis), the moneyline is a true two-way market.

Line / Handicap / Spread

The favoured team is "handicapped" — required to win by more than a set margin — to balance the bet. A Warriors -6.5 handicap means the Warriors must win by 7 or more for your bet to win. Half-point lines eliminate pushes.

Totals (Over/Under)

Bet whether the combined score will exceed a posted number. Available across sports — total points (rugby league), total runs (cricket), total goals (football), total games (tennis sets).

Same-Game Multis & Bet Builders

Combine multiple correlated bets from a single match into one priced bet. Example: Warriors to win + over 40.5 points + anytime try-scorer Reece Walsh. Correlations are priced in, so the combined odds are lower than naively multiplying — but builders generate the biggest viral wins.

Player Props

Bets on individual player performance: tries, runs, wickets, goals, three-pointers, hits. Major sports books offer 200+ props per A-League or NRL match.

Futures & Outrights

Pre-tournament or season-long bets — Super Rugby premiership winner, NPC champion, Premier League top scorer. Prices move significantly with team news and form. See our World Cup 2026 outrights breakdown for current example odds.

Live / In-play

Markets that open after kickoff. Prices update in real-time as the game state changes. Useful for in-running reads but high variance — markets reprice fast and limits are lower than pre-match.

Reading odds — decimal, fractional and American

NZ books quote in decimal odds by default. The number is your total return (stake + winnings) per NZ$1 staked. NZ$10 at 2.40 returns NZ$24 — NZ$14 profit plus your stake.

Implied probabilityDecimalFractional (UK)American
50%2.001/1 (evens)+100
40%2.506/4+150
33%3.002/1+200
67%1.501/2-200
80%1.251/4-400

Implied probability is simply 1 ÷ decimal odds. A 2.50 line implies a 40% chance. Books price in a margin — the "overround" — so the implied probabilities across all outcomes of a market typically sum to 102–110%, not 100%. The lower the overround, the better the value.

Deposits & withdrawals for NZ punters

Because TAB NZ and Betcha are NZ-licensed operators, they support native NZ banking rails without crypto or e-wallet workarounds. This is one of the simplest deposit and withdrawal experiences in any gambling category for Kiwis.

  • Visa Debit / Mastercard: Instant deposit, free, processed in NZD. Withdrawals to the same card in 1–2 business days.
  • Apple Pay / Google Pay (Betcha): Instant, free.
  • Worldline / Windcave A2A: Direct NZ bank-to-bank, the cleanest method for high-volume punters. Same-day withdrawal where supported.
  • Retail cash deposits (TAB NZ): 700+ outlets across Aotearoa.
  • Bank wire: Always available, 1–3 business days, no fees.

Neither operator requires crypto deposits or international e-wallets. Both fully verify identity at signup, so there is no second-stage KYC at first withdrawal — withdrawals to your verified card or bank account go without friction.

Strategy & bankroll basics

Sports betting is an entertainment product, not an income strategy. The vast majority of recreational bettors lose money over the long run — that's not pessimism, it's the maths of pricing margins. The goal of strategy is to make your entertainment dollar go further and to avoid the common errors that accelerate losses.

Set a stake size and stick to it

Decide on a unit size — typically 1–2% of your bankroll — and bet the same unit regardless of confidence. Variable unit sizing ("this one is a sure thing") is where most recreational punters lose discipline. If you have NZ$500 set aside for the NRL season, NZ$5–10 per bet is a sustainable unit. Anything bigger and you can be out of the season after one bad weekend.

Avoid chasing

The single largest predictor of severe losses is bet-sizing increases after losses. If you lose your unit, the next bet is the same unit — not double, not "to win back the previous loss." This rule alone separates manageable recreational play from harmful play.

Bet on what you know

Pricing is less efficient in markets the books trade less heavily — NPC rugby, Super Smash cricket, A-League. The All Blacks at the Olympics will be perfectly priced; an NPC promotion game less so. Specialise where you have a knowledge edge, even a small one.

Track every bet

Even a spreadsheet with date, stake, odds, result and notes will tell you within a season whether your selection is profitable. Without records, every bettor remembers wins and forgets losses — and underestimates how much they've actually spent.

Walk away when the entertainment stops

If you're betting on a sport you don't enjoy watching, or staying up at 4am for a market you don't care about, the entertainment value has already gone. That's the moment to take a break. Set session limits in your TAB or Betcha account to enforce this automatically.

Tools to keep betting fun

Both TAB NZ and Betcha require deposit limits at account opening — set them as low as you reasonably need and only raise them after a cooling-off period if your circumstances change. Both also offer session time-outs, reality checks, and self-exclusion (six months to permanent).

Frequently asked questions

Is online sports betting legal in New Zealand?

Yes — but only via TAB NZ or Betcha. The Racing Industry Act 2020 (as amended 28 June 2025) makes it unlawful for anyone other than TAB NZ to take sports or racing bets from people in New Zealand, and unlawful for NZ residents to place such bets with offshore operators.

What's the difference between TAB NZ and Betcha?

They share the same operating licence, parent company and trading book — so pricing is identical. Differences are in user experience: Betcha is a faster mobile-first app with stronger bet builders; TAB NZ has deeper racing markets, a retail network, and more integrated account features. Many punters keep both.

Are sports betting winnings taxed in NZ?

No. Casual gambling winnings — including sports and racing bets — are not taxable for individuals in New Zealand. The professional gambler test is rarely applied to recreational sports punters. The 2024 Offshore Gambling Duty is paid by operators, not players.

Can I use offshore sportsbooks from New Zealand?

Since 28 June 2025, it is unlawful for NZ-located residents to place sports or racing bets with operators other than TAB NZ or Betcha. Offshore operator KYC will catch NZ residency at withdrawal. The offshore brands listed on this page are included for informational comparison and are intended for readers outside New Zealand.

What sports get the deepest markets in NZ?

Rugby Union, Rugby League (NRL), Cricket (Black Caps + IPL + Super Smash), Football (A-League, EPL, FIFA World Cup), and horse + harness racing. The All Blacks have the deepest single-team market on the NZ book.

What does "cash out" mean?

Cash out lets you settle an open bet for a calculated value before the event ends, locking in some profit (or limiting a loss) instead of waiting for the result. The cashed-out value reflects current odds; it is always lower than the bet's full potential return.

Final reminder — if you are located in New Zealand: bet only with TAB NZ or Betcha. The offshore brands ranked at the top of this page do not hold an NZ licence to take sports or racing bets from people in NZ. Their KYC will identify NZ residency at withdrawal, with the prospect of forfeited funds and account closure.
